چکیده

Abstract Fescue toxicosis negatively impacts cattle productivity. Previous data from our laboratory has demonstrated that within a herd respond differently when grazing tall fescue, thus variation breed may provide genetic tolerance to the negative effects on performance. results in major cardiovascular system, it was hypothesized exposure ergot alkaloids pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP). The objective of this study examine changes PAP and other production parameters consuming endophyte-infected fescue. Pregnant Angus cows (2 4 years; n = 65) were randomly divided graze either (EI) or novel endophyte (EN) pastures for4 consecutive weeks starting April. Weekly measurements collected monitor physiological responses In addition, measured every weeks. Data analyzed using MIXED procedure SAS, statistical significance determined at P < 0.05 tendency 0.10, evaluated treatment, age, week, its interactions BW, ADG, BCS, HCS, HSS PAP. Exposure EI did not affect BCS (P >0.05). Whereas, hair coat scores (1-5 scale) significantly less for EN (2.15 ± 0.05) compared with (2.31 0.05; 0.05). Additionally, shedding reduced (2.3±0.05) (2.5±0.05; P< There significant difference exposed (37.16 0.59 mm Hg) (31.31 0.56 Hg; 0.0001). tended deviate over 14-week between treatment groups 0.0677). As expected, fescue resulted greater HCS HSS. However, decrease unexpected. Thus, further investigations are needed interaction alkaloid such as potentially predict differences beef identify animals would have lower risk developing toxicosis.

Novel endophyte-infected tall fescue for growing beef cattle.

Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea, Shreb.) is the predominant cool-season, perennial grass in the eastern half of the United States, and the majority is infected with the endemic endophyte (E+) Neotyphodium coenophialum, resulting in millions of dollars in revenues lost to the beef industry. Endophyte-free (E-) tall fescue was initially tapped as a "silver bullet" for the solution to fescue toxi...

Novel Endophyte-Infected Tall Fescue

Tall fescue (Schedonorus phoenix (Scop.) Holub) is a cool season perennial grass that fills a critical forage produc-tion gap in the Southeast and is the predominant forage crop in much of the U.S. In fact, this species is the most widely used grass in improved U.S. pastures, occupying more than 36 million acres. Its popularity is related to establishment ease, drought tolerance, excellent graz...

Microarray analysis of endophyte-infected and endophyte-free tall fescue.

Many grasses have mutualistic symbioses with fungi of the family Clavicipitaceae. Tall fescue can harbor the obligate endophyte, Neotyphodium coenophialum that is asexually propagated and transmitted via host seeds. Total RNA was isolated from pseudostems of known endophyte-infected (E+) and endophyte-free (E-) plants and tested in triplicate on the Affymetrix Wheat Genome Array GeneChip and Ba...

Vasoactivity and Vasoconstriction Changes in Cattle Related to Time off Toxic Endophyte-Infected Tall Fescue

Previous research has indicated that serotonergic and α-adrenergic receptors in peripheral vasculature are affected by exposure of cattle grazing toxic endophyte-infected (E+; Epichlöe coenophialia) tall fescue (Lolium arundinaceum). The objective of this experiment was to determine the period of time necessary for the vascular effects of ergot alkaloids to subside. Two experiments were conduct...

Interaction of breed type and endophyte-infected tall fescue on milk production and quality in beef cattle.

Decreased milk production of beef cattle grazing endophyte-infected (EI) tall fescue (TF), an important cool season grass in the southeastern United States, can affect calf growth. The objective was to determine whether a thermal or heat-tolerant Bos taurus breed of cattle, Romosinuano (RO), would tolerate EI TF toxins relative to Angus (AN) cattle. Milk production and quality were examined on ...
